Lawn mower starts then dies or won’t stay running

Reviewed 6 primary sourcesSee sources

An engine that starts and then dies, or bogs down while mowing, is usually short of fuel or air, or working too hard. The manufacturers’ lists overlap with the no-start checks.

Checks in order

  1. Check fuel and the tank cap vent

Stale or dirty fuel and a restricted fuel cap vent can stop an engine soon after it starts.[2]

  2. Check the air filter

A dirty air filter shows up in every manufacturer list for stalling or lost power.[3][5][1]

  3. Check the oil level and debris screen

Kohler lists an incorrect oil level and a dirty debris screen as causes of an engine stopping suddenly.[1]

  4. Reduce the load

For power loss mid-mow, Briggs & Stratton suggests raising the cutting height in tall grass, clearing clippings from under the deck, and sharpening or replacing a dull, bent or loose blade.[3]

  5. Check the spark plug

A dirty or faulty spark plug appears in both Kohler’s and Briggs & Stratton’s lists.[1][3]

What the symptom can point to

Dies at idle

Kohler lists a misadjusted idle mixture or idle speed; the fix is adjusting the idle or cleaning the carburetor.[2]

Deeper causes

Kohler also lists a faulty carburetor, a leaking head gasket or intake, a misadjusted choke or throttle, and intermittent kill-switch wiring.[2]
