Should you repair or replace your lawn mower?

On this page

Start with a diagnosis and a total repair estimate. A mower that will not start may have a very different problem from one with a damaged deck or transmission. The symptom alone does not tell you whether replacement makes sense.

Identify what is actually wrong

Give the technician the make and model and explain when the problem happens. Ask which part or system has failed, what needs replacing and whether the proposed work fixes the fault or is simply routine maintenance.

A tune-up can be useful, but its menu price does not establish the price of a repair. Check how diagnosis and tune-up charges differ before accepting a maintenance package as a repair estimate.

Compare the full costs

Use the quote for your machine, including parts, labor and transport. For a replacement, use the price of a machine that meets your needs rather than the cheapest mower in a different category.

Our suggested comparison includes:

  • The complete repair quote and any fee due if you decline it.
  • The cost of a suitable replacement and getting it home.
  • The condition of the deck, drive system and other major parts.
  • The likelihood of obtaining the parts the technician identified.
  • Your need for the equipment while waiting for either option.

There is no fixed percentage in this guide that makes the decision for every mower. A repair that is sensible for a sturdy, otherwise useful machine may be poor value for one with several unrelated problems.

Ask what happens after the repair

Get the repair scope and any applicable warranty in writing. Ask which work is covered, for how long and how a repeat fault would be handled. Do not assume the original manufacturer warranty covers an independent repair.

Ask about completion timing once the needed parts are identified. A shop’s general promise or an old customer review is not an appointment or a delivery date for your machine.

Understand the cost of declining

Some providers charge for diagnosis whether or not you go ahead. Others apply an estimate fee to an approved repair. Ask about reassembly, storage and getting the equipment back before leaving it at the shop.

If the machine is beyond economic repair, ask about collecting it and any disposal options separately. A repair quote does not establish free disposal or a trade-in value.

Choose a provider that accepts the machine

Compare the Knoxville directory or Spokane directory. Tell the provider whether the mower is gas, corded electric or battery powered, and whether it is a walk-behind, riding or zero-turn model. Selling that type of mower does not guarantee the workshop accepts it.
